Nvidia’s advantages: Blackwell AI chips play (another) stock price

Nvidia said it earned $19.31 billion in the quarter, more than double the $9.24 billion it posted in the third quarter last year. Adjusted for one-time items, it earned $0.81 per share.

  • Nvidia (NVDA/NASDAQ): Earnings per share came in at $0.81 (versus the $0.75 forecast), while revenue came in at $35.08 billion (versus the $33.16 billion forecast).

Wall Street analysts on earnings reported by Nvidia

Wall Street analysts had expected adjusted earnings of $0.75 a share on revenue of $33.17 billion, according to FactSet. Investors took the results lightly, however, and high-flying Nvidia stock fell nearly 1% in after-hours trading. Shares in Nvidia Corp. up 195% so far this year.

“The age of AI is in full swing, driving a global revolution in Nvidia computing,” said Jensen Huang, co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, in a statement.

Nvidia’s third-quarter data center revenue was $30.8 billion, up 112% from a year ago. That growth is driven by demand for Hopper’s computing platform for large-scale linguistic models, recommendation engines and generative AI applications, the company said.

Blackwell and Nvidia

Analysts have been looking at Nvidia’s direction in its Blackwell graphics processor chip unit, the next generation of artificial intelligence seen in demand by companies like OpenAI and others building AI data centers.

Nvidia Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress said Blackwell production shipments are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 and continue into 2026. On an earnings call Wednesday, Kress told investors that both the Hopper GPU and Blackwell systems “have some assets.” Issues, and Blackwell’s demand is expected to exceed supply for several quarters in the 2026 fiscal year. “

“Every customer is in a rush to be the first to market,” Kress said. “Blackwell is now in the hands of all of our major partners, and they are working to bring it to their data centers.”

The company, seen as a bellwether for AI demand, will deliver “more Blackwells than we previously estimated” this quarter, Huang added.
