Meta shelf-testing system in US, adopts ‘public notes’ model like X Via Reuters
(Reuters) – Meta is ending its fact-checking program in the US and replacing it with a “Community Notes” program similar to that of Elon Musk’s X, the parent of Facebook (NASDAQ: ) said on Tuesday.
The Public Notes Model will allow users on the Meta social networks Facebook, Instagram and Threads to publicize potentially misleading posts that require more context, rather than placing responsibility on independent fact-checking organizations and experts.
“Experts, like everyone else, have their own biases and opinions. This is reflected in the decisions others make about what to test and how … A program intended to inform often becomes a tool for evaluation,” Meta said.
Meta added that its efforts over the years to manage content across its platforms have grown “to the point where we make too many mistakes, frustrate our users and often get in the way of the free speech we are willing to allow.”
The company said it will begin rolling out Community Notes in the United States in the next few months and will develop the model within the year.
It will also stop demoting censored content and use a label that notifies users that there is additional information associated with a post, instead of the company’s current method of displaying full-screen warnings that users must click through before viewing a post.
