Years, we always used many of our shopping envelopes. Work hard to help stick to our budget, but we slowly moved to use our debit cards and follow all of YouNenaBudget.
Worked well, until one day when I realized it wasn’t working and I thought.
Let me tell you about it …
You see, we’ve been teaching Kiersyn (4 year old) for money. We were talking about how to pay things to get money. We have been providing opportunities to make additional jobs to earn money for the things they want to buy.
Of course, there was something he wanted to buy and he didn’t have enough money. I told him that he could do some money to get money and replied, “or you can use your card to buy.”
I realized that he did not have the idea that my debit card was linked to our bank account with real finances.I tried to explain this, but I knew it wasn’t doing much of the mind.
He just thinks the plastic card is meant that you do not have to spend money to pay for something. And that a plastic card is to reach the limitless ability to buy items.
I think maybe it’s time to get back to a time envelopes for a while so my young children see me using real money like my old children made? Or at least make sure that I take money to regularly use and have these conversations with small children about money, banks, debit cards, and workouts.
Kiersyn’s story is why it is very important that we have discussions with our children for money as soon as possible. It is also a good reminder that our financial support affects our children and how they will view and lead money in the future.
