DIY upgrade for a patio table

This table was built the way I did by putting fiberglass on top of a new bathtub, so it’s amazingly built. So the countertop is an exact copy of our shower—if you wanted to know, now you do. The legs are from the potato tower. They are killed along with the 1x1s, and they leave the potato tower.
The tools used to build this were my big saw, dovetail saw, chisel, hammer, square, 6 irons, and block plane.
The bath pan was laid out very much in the “standard parts” way as it had to match the size of the bath pan exactly. All angles are 45 degrees. It was a challenge to put together. The plywood was then cut to size to build the bottom/top and planed to match.
A washing pan (inverted) rests on the frame. The frame is made of high quality steel. I fastened the legs to the pan and connected the legs with the upper bars in a slightly bent way by placing 1 × 1 on the top of the legs, making visible pencil marks on them. This is a “live” method where the pieces are put together one after the other rather than cutting everything first and putting everything together later. This way any mistakes can usually be corrected in the next step. After putting the frame together, the washing pan was removed from the bottom (where it supports the legs) up. Done!
A sturdy little table. (The chair is from freecycle.)
What is the point of this post?
- The total cost was low—but not as low as getting a free table on craigslist or freecycle.
- I repurposed materials I already had and kept the cost down even more—no shopping was needed to build this table.
- I taught myself everything I know about woodworking over the past year – although I can’t build beautiful things (yet), I can build solid things. And you can do it too.
Being frugal does not mean not having a table and sitting down. (I guess that’s what it means to be a minimalist ;-P … just kidding!) It means not buying an $89.95 table at a furniture auction with 0% interest for the next 36 months.
