President-elect Donald Trump announced late Friday that he has selected Scott Turner, former executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), to serve as the agency’s next secretary. US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in his management.
Turner, the president-elect’s running mate and member of the America First Policy Instituteis a professional football player and has represented the state of Texas in the Collin County and Rockwall County divisions, from 2013-2017. Turner helped “lead an unprecedented effort to transform our nation’s most depressed communities,” according to Trump’s statement released by the transition team, and worked closely with former HUD Secretary Ben Carson “overseeing more than 200 policy actions that advance economic development.” “
The president-elect added that Turner oversees approximately $50 billion in private investment in opportunity areas, and is the founder and CEO of Council on Community Engagement and Opportunities (CEOC) which provides sports programs and counseling to local communities. He is also a lecturer at Prestonwood Baptist Church is based in Plano, Texas.
Housing industry groups reacted quickly. From the Community Home Lenders of America (CHLA): “CHLA congratulates Scott Turner on his nomination as the next Secretary of HUD. We look forward to continuing to work with HUD and the rest of the administration to create more affordable and accessible homeownership, especially for first-time and underserved borrowers.
“Beginning in 2025, CHLA will continue to lead important programs at FHA that protect borrowers and the community lenders they serve, such as: risk-based premiums, the option to pay a portion of applications, simplify condo approvals, and compare the payment rate.”
David Dworkin, president and CEO of National Housing Conference (NHC), also weighed in: “Scott Turner is well committed to community development and was a vocal advocate for investing in underserved communities in the first Trump administration,” he said. “We look forward to working with him in the coming years.
“He was the spokesman for the Opportunity Zone programs and we expect to work with him to expand and expand this program to encourage the construction of affordable houses for those who buy houses for the first time, especially those who buy houses for the first time.”
Turner’s announcement comes along with a slew of other major nominations made late Friday, including hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as secretary of the US Department of TreasuryRep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) as secretary of US Department of LaborRussell set out to lead the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Marty Makary as commissioner of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), with physician and former congressman Dave Weldon as head of the organization Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
